Your Dental Team is the Key to Your Practice Growth

“You Perform Dentistry – your Team Grows the Practice”
Some of the dentists we work with are very familiar with this thought – but surprisingly many other dentists are not truly aware of this.
The most successful practices know that it takes your dental team to be in top notch, working order, like a “well-oiled machine” in order to create what we like to call a “Lifestyle Practice.”
But before we talk more about a successful support staff in a dental office- we should talk about what makes a practice successful.
Most dentists I speak to say that they would like to:
  1. Earn more money
  2. Work fewer hours to spend more time with family
  3. Stop being a “parent” to their staff/team
  4. Get out of “dental insurance dependency”
Do any of these situations apply to you?
Dental Team Training Banner 300x250Are you stuck in the “rat-race” of dentistry, trying to figure out how to make more money by WASTING more money on bad advertising? Or trying to make your next million, penny-by-penny due to the limited insurance options that your patients’ treatments are holding you back?
I bet you already know (and I hope you do or we have lots of work to do!) that in order for you to make more money with less effort – you need to start treating more comprehensively with cash-paying customers.
  • Treatments that do NOT get covered by your patient’s insurance programs.
  • Treatments that are more than “1-tooth” dentistry.
  • Treatments that all of your competitors most likely are not suggesting to customers
Now, here’s the good news…
All of these, EASY, simple changes that separate a $1M practice from a two, three, or four million dollar practice is done by the TEAM!
After all, your practice makes the most money when you are doing dentistry!
So, stop baby-sitting and trying to figure out all of this stuff on your own. You already know you need a team behind you to succeed – so let’s unleash the dental team, give them more responsibilities, and let’s grow this together!
What’s Your Plan?
The first step in your journey should be to have a plan. If you do not know where to start, make sure you fill out this questionnaire and you can have a quick plan of attack phone call strategy session with our premier Practice Strategist – Mr. Scott Manning, MBA.
Once you develop a plan with Scott – we will be able to work with you in all facets of your practice to start getting your team up to speed to handle EVERYTHING except doing the dentistry – because that’s your job!
After we discover your passion – we can start weeding out the B.S. time-wasting activities you are currently doing that aren’t making you money, and start focusing on your success – so that you can spend more time with your family.
Start Now
I hope by now you truly understand how important your team is – remember you can get a free copy of the book “Dental Team Transformation” with the 2 audio CD’s – we’ll ship them right to your office or home.
Or, let’s have a quick conversation and we’ll see what is holding you back. You can send me a message here.
To your lifestyle practice –

A Marketing Method that Top Companies (and Dentists) Always Do

A Question I Received…

Last month, I received a question from a dentist that said,

“I know I should be at least trying to market to my patients, but it seems like I don’t know where I should invest – what are some affordable options to market currently?”

This is a good question because I see the companies out there all trying to sell you on what is the ‘best’ marketing and advertising program, and it can be a bit confusing.

Here is a breakdown of 4 of the current methods that work, along with the pro’s and con’s of each. NOTE – these are all GREAT options that are affordable too!

1. Email Newsletter Marketing – This is a very inexpensive method to keep in contact with your existing patients to continue to build trust and educate on the services you provide. You can capture new email addresses for all of your existing patients when they visit the practice. Pros – inexpensive, easy to do. Cons – Usually only applies to your existing patients and those in your practice, so not the best for obtaining new patients.

This is the most popular method of advertising and educating from most of my clients. See more info at our Dental Email Newsletter Program.

What the Big Boys Do

Email Newsletter marketing is done by virtually EVERY large company – well, because it is effective for staying in front of your audience.

Every week after the Green Bay Packers win, I get an email from NFL.com to purchase more Packers gear. I don’t always open them, but they are always on my mind!

My advice – do what the “big boys do.” – PLUS, it’s affordable!

2. Social Media Marketing – this takes time and effort, OR a big upfront cost. Once Facebook, Twitter, Google and all the other programs are set up, you must spend time engaging and creating awareness with your patients and guests. Facebook allows ads that can directly increase your efforts, but be careful with how much you spend as ad dollars can add up!

3. SEO – most dentists are jumping on the online bandwagon – and rightfully so because all of your patients are online and searching. This is ideal for new patients seeking a general dentist, BUT the competition is FIERCE! Costs can be high to “rank” high on Google and Bing, and the reward is not always the best. And again, it is best for obtaining new patients to the practice.

The cons however, is you may NOT be getting the types of clients you want. It is 1000x more effective to build on the relationships of your existing patients, treat them well, suggest optimal health related treatments, and teach them how to refer!

4. Direct Mail – this is considered old school by many, but highly effective. AGAIN, look at what the “big boys” are doing, by that I mean the big corporations. I get tons of postcards from all sorts of companies – and they keep sending them – because they work!

Pros – can be really affordable, if you define your market (i.e. TMD, pain, OSA patients, implants, ortho, etc), plus you can start small and scale up.

We have lots of people having success with this just with advertising simple postcards on the MLS laser for example.

Cons – it takes consistency – you can’t expect to send 1 mailing and have instant results.

Case Study...

I get a postcard from a dentist here in Milwaukee about once every 6 weeks - AND I'm not even geographically close to the office. BUT, the guy knows how to stay in front of people! It MUST be working, otherwise he would not keep sending out postcards each month!
And his name is Dr. Molar - how is that for Marketing!

The moral of the story is that there are a lot of options for dental marketing. If you have the budget to grow, then you can get involved with SEO, additional web sites and lead generation pages, etc, but only if you are seeking to get more butts in chairs. If you are working long hours and have a full schedule, you will need to implement some methods to increase profits and sell higher-fee cases.

(You can get a FREE Coaching Call on that on our FREE Dental Consultation page)

Hope this clears some things up for all of you!

Cheers
–
Nate

P.S. If you are wanting to start small on a simple budget – I highly recommend starting with an email newsletter to your patients. Watch this video on Patient Email Newsletters and check out the new program I’m working on with many dentists currently!

Many dentists nowadays are looking for different ways to grow their practices and make more money in the dental practice.

It is to the surprise of many people that despite the economy being down in many areas, certain dentists are able to grow their practices so much, and not have to deal with patients' insurance. The most successful dentists have 1 thing in common - they almost ALWAYS have a coach or mentor that works with them.

One of the top mentors currently working with many of our clients at BioRESEARCH is Mr. Scott Manning, MBA.

Joint Vibration Analysis For Diagnosing TMJ Dysfunction

The temporomandibular joints or TMJs are one of the more complex joints in the human body - here we will discuss a method in the Joint Vibration Analysis or JVA that many dentists are using to aid in the proper diagnosis of TMD or TMJ dysfunction prior to routine dental care.
TMD or TMJ dysfunction is a complex, umbrella term for any of the pathologies associated with the joints themselves, in addition to the craniofacial muscles and teeth that can cause irritation or dysfunction in the joint itself. TMJ can cause many different signs and symptoms including facial and neck pain, joint and jaw pain, difficulty chewing, eye pain, ringing in the ears and tinnitus, as well as the more commonly known 'clicking' and 'popping' of the joints. Joint Vibration Analysis offers a method of helping the clinician to diagnose the intracapsular, or 'within the joint capsule' space of the TMJs.
The JVA measures TMJ Capsule health during function
Often times in the modern dental practice, dentists are left with more subjective methods of diagnosing TMD in in the joint, solely basing the treatment planning and diagnosis on patient signs and symptoms. However, the signs and symptoms often come later in the phase of pathology, whereas the problem can often be identified much earlier in its development prior to the patient observing those symptoms. Joint Vibration Analysis is a way to give the clinician insight as to how healthy the joint is during function (chewing and speaking) and allows dentists to properly find the problem long before symptoms may arise.
Similar to how a medical doctor takes biometric measurements of height, weight, and blood pressure as a baseline during a routine medical exam, Joint Vibration Analysis gives dentists that same biometric data on the health of the joint capsule space during a routine dental exam. The test is non-invasive to the patient, is recorded by the dental staff, and only takes a few minutes to record in the clinic.
Joint Vibration Analysis works by having the patient open and close their jaw a few times while vibrational 'transducers' record any abnormal joint vibrations. These vibrations are recorded as objective data and the results can give the dentist good information on how the TMJ disc is moving in the joint.
Normal joints should have no vibration as the joint should properly function with the disc in tact and those that have pathology in the disc space will be picked up by Joint Vibration Analysis. The dentist can tell everything from normal to a displaced or clicking disc, as well as a perforated or torn disc.
Nathan helps Dentists who needs help with diagnosing TMJ dysfunction with the JVA. Watch a free Webinar at Joint Vibration Analysis. Read more about the JVA including a section for dentists and patients.

Dental Marketing: Create an Email List And Offer Your Patients Coupons and Discounts

In the modern technological age, it is no doubt that many dental offices are looking for ways to stay in contact with their customers.

Most of your customers are on Facebook and Twitter, so I see many dental offices marketing in these avenues already.

An Untapped Dental Marketing Avenue

However, one method that I do not see dental offices taking advantage of is email marketing. Most email marketing platforms are super easy to use, and the most successful businesses, both large and small take advantage of newsletter and email marketing.

How to Set Up a Dental Newsletter to Market to Your Patients

1. Visit Aweber and sign up for a Free trial for your account. Watch this video to learn how:

2. Add your Email addresses from your existing database, and get new addresses from each new patient. You can simply ask each customer upon checking out and say,

"Would you like to receive coupons on how to save at your dental visits with us by signing up for your newsletter?"

You can also add a signup form by your front desk and give them a coupon for 50% off one of your inexpensive services, like Whitening for example.

3. Create a monthly newsletter. You can add your own pictures (like your logo for branding, etc) and send out a newsletter each month offering a discount and an incentive for getting customers in. You can even offer a free consultation as part of your dental marketing plan.

4. Watch your Business Grow!

With the Aweber program, you are able to see who and how frequently you get clicks to your offers, so it's a great way to increase the marketing to dental patients!

Good Luck!

The Pueblo Chieftain | Dentist back in business with new TMJ, apnea

After closing his general dentistry practice and teaching for two years, Dr. Jim Beck has opened TMJ-Sleep Colorado, a clinic dedicated solely to diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea and TMJ (cranio-mandibular) pain and dysfunction disorders.

The two conditions often are intricately related, or can occur independently. Both can cause numerous other health issues if untreated or treated incorrectly.

Beck sees patients primarily via referral from medical doctors and dentists and works closely with a variety of specialists to pinpoint the cause and treat jaw and facial pain and sleep apnea.

Beck, who is board-certified in TMJ and sleep apnea treatment, did a lot of both during his 16 years as a dentist.

“But it became a logistics and scheduling problem” because the two specialties require so much time.

The sheer number of patients who had one or both issues convinced him of the need for the specialty clinic he opened in December.

He invested heavily in specialized equipment, including CT scanner and X-ray machines designed specifically for targeting the head and neck.

One of those devices allows him to design intricately fitted sleep appliances that address each patient’s particular jaw misalignment or disease process.

He also has equipment that allows him to measure patient progress via mobile equipment that will provide the equivalent of an overnight sleep study in patient’s own homes.

Optimum treatment requires close cooperation between Beck and each patient’s medical and dental providers, he stressed.

Beck said there are many myths and a lot of misinformation about joint disorders and sleep apnea, as well as how they’re best treated.

Beck said he’s a firm believer in CPAP for treatment of sleep apnea, but studies have shown that at least 50 percent of patients who have the machines don’t use them or can’t tolerate them — for a variety of reasons.

“You can’t piddle around with this,” he said. “That’s why I want to provide focused, evidence-based treatment in tandem with patients’ other providers.”

TMJ-Sleep Colorado is located in Suite 308 of the medical building at 1619 N. Greenwood St. The phone number is 544-0901.

Dentist Laser Decreases Vibrations the the TMJ

Patients nowadays have many options for treatment in the dental office - new dentist laser technologies are now available to aid in the treatment of TMJ inflammation and TMJ dysfunction.

A new dental laser technology that BioRESEARCH Associates (Milwaukee, WI) is offering dentists is known as the MLS Laser Therapy (ASA, Italy).

The MLS laser is a diode laser, that works on the triad of pain, inflammation, and edema by helping with ATP production in the mitochondrial "power-house" of the cells.

MLS is a great therapy option for those looking for alternative, non-invasive treatment methods in the dental office. Many dentists trained in treating TMJ dysfunctions are used to traditional therapies including:
  • TENS therapy - Ultra low frequency "Transcutaneous Electro Nerual Stimulation"
  • Injection Therapy - Everything from Prolo-therapy and saline injections, etc
  • Wilckodontics® - a method of Accelerated Osteogenic OrthodonticsTM or AOO
  • Iontophoresis - medication delivery system via passing electrical current through the skin
  • Ultra-Sound and Vibration Therapy
Recently, representatives from BioRESEARCH were able to demonstrate the efficacy of the MLS dentist laser by measuring TMJ vibrations, both before and after dental laser therapy.

Here is a video showing a before and after Joint Vibration Analysis on a patient with early TMJ symptoms of vibration and/or early disc movement:

MLS Dental Laser - A Diode Low Level Laser Therapy as a Pain Treatment Alternative

MLS® Laser Therapy Now an Option for Dental Pain Patients

Here at BioRESEARCH, we are an established company in the niche of dental diagnostical products, specializing in those assisting in the understanding of pathologies of the craniofacial and stomatognathic systems.

Though we have long time been just associated with diagnostical devices (Joint Vibration Analysis or JVA, EMG, Jaw Tracking) with the exception of the BioTENS and QuadraTENS, we now have brought the dental industry an option in treatment.

The MLS® Laser Therapy is now available for dentists in the US and Canada, treating craniofacial and TMJ pain. The Mphi and MPhi5 laser models have been in the medical, chiropractic, and veterinary industries for a few years, and with the help of ASA lasers (Italy), the dental industry now has the ability to use this modern technology to treat pain and inflammation in dental patients.

The MLS® Laser Therapy is unique in that it brings a patented wave technology, combining dual wavelengths and both pulsed and continuous waves, making it one of the most efficient lasers for treating pain, inflammation, and edema.

Current dentists are using the laser to treat pain associated and as a result of TMD, or TMJ dysfunction, as well as to aid in speeding up the healing from surgery and extractions.

Some dentists are using the MLS laser therapy to speed up orthodontic teeth movement and deprogram the TMJ's prior to taking a bite registration, as an alternative to the time consuming TENSing that dentists will often use.

Dentists can visit http://MLSDentalLaser.com to download more information on the new device and patients can contact BioRESEARCH directly at 1-800-251-2315 to find a dentist in your area that can offer this treatment for chronic facial pain.

Dentistry Saves Teeth, Sleep Dentistry Saves Lives

DENTISTRY SAVES TEETH, SLEEP DENTISTRY SAVES LIVES
By Dr. Brock Rondeau, DDS

info@rondeauseminars.com

One of the most serious health concerns in our society today is the presence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The majority of patients with OSA have two main characteristics: i) loud snoring and, ii) excessive daytime sleepiness.

The diagnosis of OSA, a medical sleep disorder, can only be made by a medical practitioners such as a sleep specialist or E.N.T. specialist. Sleep apnea occurs when the tongue falls back and blocks the airway for 10 seconds or longer. Some patients may stop breathing hundreds of times each night which can be extremely detrimental to their overall health, as shown below.
Some facts that health care professionals need to be aware of include the following:

Co-Morbidity Correlations with Obstructive Sleep Apnea

•Hypertension 40 – 50%
•Coronary heart disease 34%
•Congestive heart failure 34%
•Diabetes 65%
•Erectile dysfunction 50%
•Renal diseased 50%
•Fibromyalgia 80%
•Nocturnal strokes 84%

There is also a high correlation between patients who have GERD (gastroesopha-geal reflux) and OSA. With regard to diabetes, excessive apneaic events affect the production of insulin which encourages the onset of type 2 diabetes. These apneaic events also affect the permeability of the endothelial lining of the arteries. This increasing incidence of the buildup of plaque in the arteries increases the chance of cardiovascular complications, such as a heart attack. The weakening of the walls of the arteries increases the susceptibility of rupturing of these vessels which occurs during strokes.

Obstructive sleep apnea is an extremely dangerous health risk. Six out of ten patients over age 40 snore and two out of six have OSA. The other rather alarming fact is that 85% of patients with OSA have been undiagnosed. This means that massive numbers of patients have the problem but are totally unaware of the dangers they are facing in the future if they are not diagnosed and do not receive proper treatment. Since studies have indicated that a patient with severe OSA, left untreated, will die 8 – 10 years earlier than a patient without OSA.

The fact is that patients with severe sleep apnea are definitely at risk to die prematurely and spend many years in poor health with cardiovascular disease, diabetes and possibly strokes. Recently, a woman, age 62, came in to make an appointment for a snoring appliance as her husband had been complaining about the noise for years. She was informed that an oral appliance could not be fabricated without a sleep study to determine the presence or absence of OSA. She was told that most patients who snore have mild, moderate or severe OSA and these conditions can cause heart attacks, strokes, type 2 diabetes, etc. She stated that she had already had two heart attacks and a mild stroke. I then asked her if the medical doctor, cardiologist or neurologist suggested a sleep study to determine whether or not sleep apnea might have contributed to the heart attacks or stroke. She indicated that I was the first to make her aware of this situation.

It is my opinion that a vast majority of the medical and dental profession are not well educated in this area. The fact that only 15% of patients with OSA are diagnosed is indicative of this. The public is also not well informed about the health risks associated with this serious disorder. Most dental schools do not offer courses to help dentists understand the important role they play in the treatment of this disorder. Cardiologists and the medical profession are beginning to see the importance of diagnosing and treating patients with OSA as early as possible in order to avoid future health problems.

My treatment plan for this patient who already had two heart attacks and a mild stroke is to send her for an overnight sleep study. If she has severe OSA, a CPAP device will be prescribed. If she is diagnosed with mild to moderate OSA, an oral appliance will be fabricated and titrated until the snoring and apneaic events stop. To confirm that the oral appliance is effective, the patient will be sent back to the sleep clinic for another sleep study (PSG, polysomnogram). Dentists must confirm that the oral appliance effectively reduces the snoring and OSA.

It is the responsibility of the medical and dental profession to identify patients who have airway obstructions leading to snoring and sleep apnea. The two main signs of obstructive sleep apnea are snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness. To assist clinicians in determining the level of sleepiness, The Epworth Sleepiness Scale was introduced in 1990 by Dr. Murray Johns, Epworth Hospital, Melbourne, Australia. I have enclosed a copy for your information.

I recommend that any patient who snores, as well as their bed partner, complete the Epworth Sleepiness Scale. My experience has been that many patients, especially males, underestimate the extent of their daytime sleepiness.

Any patient with a score of 8 or higher should seek medical attention in terms of a sleep study, to diagnose the presence or absence of OSA. If the sleep study reveals that the patient only snores but does not have OSA, the dentist can legally proceed to fabricate an oral appliance. No follow-up sleep study will be necessary. If the patient has mild or moderate OSA and the sleep specialist agrees, then the dentist can fabricate an oral appliance. As mentioned previously, after the adjustments of the appliance are made over several months, the patient must have a follow-up sleep study to confirm the efficacy of the oral appliance.

The Embletta 100, a home sleep study, is utilized in our office. This is an excellent screening device to determine if the oral appliance has been effective. During the titration (adjustment) phase of the oral appliance, it is often useful to test the efficacy of the oral appliance with the Embletta 100. Patients much prefer the home sleep study to the hospital or sleep clinic (polysomnogram) sleep study. The advantages of the Embletta 100 are that it is extremely comfortable, accurate and this test only costs the dentist five dollars.

Occasionally, we will give the patient 2 or 3 home studies while the appliance is titrated and the lower jaw is slowly moved forward. After the Embletta 100 demonstrates that the oral appliance has effectively reduced the OSA, the patient is sent back to the sleep clinic for a sleep study. The sleep specialists are impressed with this approach and are encouraged to refer more patients to our office who cannot wear the CPAP device or who only have mild to moderate OSA. Dentists have to help to educate specialists regarding their effective rol in treating patients with OSA with oral appliances. It is the role of the dental profession to educate and gain the respect of the sleep specialists by referring patients to them with severe OSA and encouraging them to wear the CPAP device.

In the U.S., Medicare has adopted a policy recently whereby they will not pay for the CPAP device unless there is compliance. Each device has a computer chip which can be transmitted over a telephone line to verify compliance. I believe that all insurance companies will follow this example. It will give clinicians who treat sleep disorders a much clearer picture of the actual compliance rate.
Whatever the statistics say, there are a large number of patients who, for a number of different reasons, cannot tolerate the CPAP device and are looking for an alternative. It is unfortunate that, at this point, neither the DME (Durable Medical Equipment) companies or the sleep specialists are recommending that the patient go to a qualified dentist to fabricate oral appliances when a patient cannot wear the CPAP device. Hopefully, this will change in the future.

The diagnosis for OSA is done using an AHI (Apnea Hypopnea Index). During the overnight sleep study, the number of apneaic and hypopnea events per hour are recorded.

APNEA A cessation of breath for 10 seconds or more
HYPOPNEA The blood oxygen level decreases 4% or more, Cessation of breath for less than 10 seconds
MILD SLEEP APNEA (OSA) 5 – 15 events per hour
MODERATE SLEEP APNEA (OSA) 16 – 30 events per hour
SEVERE SLEEP APNEA (OSA) More than 30 events per hour

There are basically three ways to treat OSA:
1. CPAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure)
2. Oral Appliances
3. Surgery

Dentists who treat sleep disorders must obviously be knowledgeable in all three areas of treatment and proceed with the therapy that is correct for each individual patient.
In the medical journal, Sleep, January 2006, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (sleep specialists) made the statement that for patients with mild to moderate OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea), the oral appliance was the number one treatment option. The guidelines also mentioned that the oral appliance was a viable option for patient who do not respond either to weight loss or have tried the CPAP device and were unable to tolerate it.

This was a monumental statement by the medical profession that, I believe, validated the importance of the dentist and the use of the oral appliance to help to treat these patients.

It is important to distinguish between mild, moderate and severe OSA. Patients that are diagnosed with severe OSA should be encouraged to wear the CPAP device since this is the gold standard for the treatment of severe OSA. The CPAP consists of a mask which the patient wears over the nose. This mask is attached to a hose connected to an air compressor and humidifier. The CPAP is extremely effective in opening the airway as the air pressure is increased gradually during the polysomnogram (sleep study) until it successfully displaces the tongue, uvula and soft palate. When the patient wears the CPAP and the air pressure is correct, it is extremely effective in eliminating sleep apnea.

Once the patient is diagnosed by the sleep specialist at the sleep clinic, the patient usually returns for a second sleep study when the technician determines what air pressure will be necessary to eliminate the OSA. The more serious the problem and, in some cases, the more obese the patient, the pressure must be increased substantially to obtain the desired result. The lower the air pressure usually results in better compliance. The exception to this would be patients with severe sleep apnea who seem to benefit the most from the CPAP. These patients feel so exhausted prior to wearing the CPAP and feel so refreshed afterwards that their compliance rate is high. My observation has been that patients with mild to moderate OSA are not as compliant. This is where, I believe, the dental profession needs to become involved. If the patient is mild to moderate and there is no necessity for surgery, then the oral appliance fabricated by the dentist is the best option. The fact is that a larger number of patients who are prescribed CPAP devices, cannot tolerate them.

There are several different CPAP and BIPAP devices so patients should be encouraged to try several types until they find one that is acceptable. I am constantly amazed by the fact that patients who were diagnosed with OSA, prescribed a CPAP unit and could not tolerate the device, were never contacted again by either the sleep specialist of the DME company. Some of these patients already have co-morbid factors such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disorder, type 2 diabetes, GERD, etc. and their health continues to deteriorate. The system certainly needs to be improved for the benefit of these patients.

If oral appliances are effective in reducing OSA in mild and moderate cases of OSA, I believe dentists should be involved in the treatment of patients who fail with the CPAP device. In my opinion, the dental profession has an obligation to treat these patients. If we educate ourselves in sleep disorders, we can save and certainly prolong lives. I have treated many patients with even severe OSA who could not wear the CPAP device and successfully reduced their apneaic events below 5 events per hour, which is normal. This treatment certainly improves their health and prolongs their life by reducing their blood pressure and their susceptibility to heart attacks, strokes and type 2 diabetes.

If general dentists wish to treat these patients, they must take courses in sleep disorder dentistry to become more knowledgeable in this area. Conversely, if they do not wish to treat, they need to at least use the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and refer patients who snore and may have OSA to dentists and sleep specialists who are qualified to treat these patients. I am hopeful that some time in the future, dental schools will start adding this to the curriculum.

HOT New Way to Market to Your Dental Customers

After speaking to a few of my clients over the past year, I have found that Marketing in the Dental office is very important - and those who market the best and with the most cost effective methods tend to be at the top when it comes to keeping those patients filling up your chairs.

A good friend of mine and a guru in the world of Dental Marketing, Mr. Eddie O'Keefe (http://www.dentistprofits.com/) taught me that by simply sending out monthly newsletters to your existing customers can increase your profits significantly.  And the good news is, that it only takes a little bit of work up front to get a newsletter account set up, and you can add news updates and dental content each month to keep your company name in front of your paying customers.

When it comes to dental marketing, it is definitely a contact sport, meaning you cannot sit on the sidelines and expect people to know each and every service your practice offers, and how you can help each of your customers.  As you know, most of your customers are just there to get a cleaning, and do not even know that general dentists can now:
  • Help TMJ, Headache, and pain patients
  • Make their teeth look like the movie stars they adore
  • Help them live longer by preventing snoring and sleep apnea
  • Do some Orthodontics cases
  • and more!
You have to constantly find ways to set yourself apart from the hundreds, if not thousands of dentists in your area.

Here is a quick way to start an EASY dental marketing campaign with your EXISTING client base that is virtually free.
  1. Set up a newsletter account at Streamsend (just like the one I send to our Dental clients)
  2. Put together all of your clients email lists into an Excel spreadsheet.  Most office managers can do this in a few minutes.  OR, make it a project over the course of a week or two if you need to add the customers manually.
  3. Pick out a template that fits your style and is dental customer appropriate.
  4. Add Content
    1. You can use articles in the news, your local media, or pretty much anything you can find online if you do not want to write original articles.  Remember that you must quote the source by including the link at the bottom of your article.
    2. Use Games for the kids (crosswords, word-finds, sudoku puzzles, etc) and RECIPES for the parents.  Parents LOVE Recipes!
  5.  Save your template and add new content each month and send out your Newsletter once per month!
Some other tips:
  • During your dental marketing campaign - stay current and add new names and email addresses as you acquire them.  Remember that some people will opt out, and that is fine, but as long as you add everybody, over time your list will grow.
  • Ask customers to use your finished cases as TESTIMONIALS on your newsletter.  After all, most people love the publicity, especially if they are a prominent figure in your community.
  • Include your Twitter and Facebook profiles in the newsletter.  The templates allow you to add a Twitter and FB logo and you can add your place page website links in their too!
  • And ALWAYS include your website and contact (phone) number so your dental marketing campaign will drive your customers back to your controlled environment of service offerings.

Good luck!
